THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:
Our Market will open an hour later than usual during the month of October which means we’ll be open from 9:00 a.m. to noon. We’ll have straw, twine and scissors available to Make-Your-Own Scarecrow! Just remember to bring some old clothes to stuff him with. Later this month we’ll have a scarecrow contest. Read the details below. And, as always, our Farmers Market Jammers all decked out in their new t-shirts and hats will lift your spirits with their fun music. Bring your instrument and/or your singin’ voice and join in!

SCARECROW CONTEST ON OCTOBER 20th! Each Saturday through October 20th, we’ll have our free Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area set up with straw, twine and scissors. All you need to do is bring some old clothes to stuff your scarecrow with. We’ll have local pumpkins available to buy too if you wish to have a head for your scarecrow. On the day of the contest, October 20th, make a scarecrow at the Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area or bring the scarecrow that you made earlier back to the Market. We’ll have a place set up to display all the scarecrows. Next to each scarecrow, we’ll place an empty mason jar. That morning we’ll give all of the vendors, volunteers, jammers and visitors one ticket each to use for voting. We’ll all get to look over the scarecrows and drop in our ticket to cast our vote for our favorite. Voting will begin at 10:00 and end at 11:00. There will be prizes for the winners.

OCTOBER FARMERS MARKET HOURS:
The Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market (Orleans) will be open through the month of October. Because of the shortened autumn days, our opening time for the last month of this season will be at 9:00 a.m. beginning October 6th. We’ll be open until noon, as always.

OUR VENDOR OF THE WEEK: For the next two weeks, the Lost River Market and Deli, a project initiated by Orange County HomeGrown, will be our featured vendor. The exciting opening of the natural food, full service grocery will happen on October 23! The Lost River Market and Deli, a cooperative, will feature healthful foods, bulk foods, and local foods. The beautiful store is located on Library Street right behind the Paoli Public Library just off the Paoli Square. Feel free to stop by a take a peek! As you know, cooperatives are built by people for people and thus depend upon memberships to get started. Cooperatives are owned by the membership. Lost River invites you to join. Just stop by their booth at the Market, visit their website http://lostrivercoop.com/ or give them a call at (812) 723-3735. If you are visiting their booth at the Market when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!

REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: The summertime weather was the hot topic at this week’s market. This time of the season, we’re usually bundled up in our sweaters while preparing our Market for opening, but this past Saturday we were wearing shorts and t-shirts! We had 37 vendors set up. We registered one new vendor. We are very happy to welcome another new volunteer, Sashia. We had visitors from Texas and all parts of Indiana. Phil Mininger brought his antique cider press and lots of apples. He made many gallons of apple cider for us to drink. It was refreshing and sweet on this hot day. Heavenbound Bluegrass joined our Farmers Market Jammers under the Jam Tent for some great music. We had several people take advantage of our free Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area. They are getting ready for our Scarecrow Contest which takes place on the 20th.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS YEAR’S ORANGE COUNTY HOMEGROWN HOLIDAY MARKET:
Orange County HomeGrown Holiday Market will take place Saturday, November 17th from 9 am – 3 pm at the Paoli High School Cafeteria and Lobby. We’re expecting about 50 local vendors. Buy your holiday gifts from our local vendors. Buy and then freeze baked goods for your holiday gatherings! We’ll have entertainment throughout the day. Refreshments will be available.

OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET: Be sure to stop by and see our new BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILOR where you can browse a great selection of books. We welcome the donations of books for the book trailer. All of the money from book sales goes to support Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market (Orleans). Just bring the books to the BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILOR and choose a book for free. Visit us at the Host Tent and have a free cup of coffee courtesy of our neighbor, Maple Street Restaurant. We are fortunate to have friendly, helpful MASTER GARDENERS at every market. Bring your gardening questions to the MASTER GARDENER TABLE and they will be very happy to help you! Learn more about the LOST RIVER COMMUNITY CO-OP which will be opening a new grocery store in Paoli this fall. You’ll be able to get a sneak preview of what the store, LOST RIVER MARKET & DELI, will look like and see its floor plan. You can even sign up to be a member!
