THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:
HomeGrown’s RiverSpirit Adopt-a-River/RiverWatch volunteers, Larry and Helen, will have some very interesting displays about these projects. The River Watch Program periodically tests local streams and rivers to gauge the health of our local waterways. The Adopt-a-River Program uses volunteers to help clean an adopted section of waterway. At 10 a.m. one of our very favorite chefs, Gregg Rago “Raggs” of Nick’s English Hut, Bloomington, will present a tasty Farm to Fork Chef Demonstration.
Also at 10 a.m., there will be a Junior Master Gardener Workshop 10:00 a.m. for young children. Kids will learn how to plant their own seeds making seed tapes. They'll learn a song about a choo choo train and foods! This event is sponsored by Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program. At 11a.m. there will be an Amateur Radio Club “Field Day” Demonstration (emergency communication using alternative energy plus contact with people around the world)
OUR VENDORS OF THE WEEK:
Judy and Lonny Thompson are new to our farmers market this season. Lonny makes the most beautiful handcrafted crochet needles. They would make a unique heirloom quality gift. Also featured this week is Mary Lou Beckett, our Master Gardener. She can be found each Saturday on the north side of the park answering questions about gardening. This week, she’s planned a special Junior Master Garden activity for the little ones. Read more about it above. If you are visiting either the Thompson’s booth or the Master Gardening booth when the timer rings, you’ll get coupon!
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT AND SPECIAL REQUEST:
If you are looking for a gift for someone special, farmers market gift certificates are now available for purchase. You’ll find them at our Host Tent. The gift certificates can be used to purchase any item from any of our friendly vendors.
Buck-a-Book is in need of cookbooks. Please consider donating or trading cookbooks at our Buck-a-Book trailer.
REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET:
Oh, ye of little faith who thought we’d get rained on missed a great day at the farmers market. It was hot and muggy, but the park had shady places and everyone was friendly. Despite the heat, 67 vendors showed up to sell and many sold out (the berries went quickly!) We registered six new vendors.
The Lawrence County Rock Club showed off their wonderful rocks and minerals and identified lots of rocks for visitors. Linda Franklin, Family Nutrition Assistant with Purdue Orange County Extension Office, used fresh produce from our vendors to make a yummy stir-fry. She also served fresh gooseberries with yogurt for a sweet treat. Fourteen more people signed up for our popular Farmers Market Walking Club and got a free health screening from our friends at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Our Jammer Tents were filled with musicians. We are hoping our buggy drivers, Brack and Linda, will return this week to take visitors for rides. Last week’s Red Cross Blood Drive netted 22 pints of blood which included blood donated by six first timers! We’ll host another Red Cross Blood Drive on August 29th.
OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET:
Be sure to stop by and see our BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER where you can browse a great selection of books. (We have thousands!) We welcome the donations of books for the book trailer. All of the money from book sales goes to support Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market (Orleans). Just bring the books to the BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER and choose a book for free. Visit us at the Host Tent and have a free cup of coffee courtesy of our neighbor, Maple Street Restaurant. We are fortunate to have friendly, helpful MASTER GARDENERS at every market. Bring your gardening questions to the MASTER GARDENER TABLE and they will be very happy to help you! Another great feature of the Market is the addition of the ORANGE COUNTY RECYCLING CO-OP truck. They will take household items for recycling, such as cardboard, newspapers, junk mail, paper, magazines, catalogues, plastic bottles #1 and #2, aluminum cans, scrap metal, metal cans, plastic grocery bags. Please rinse out plastic bottles and remove lids. Also, rinse out cans. Please break down cardboard boxes. Many of our produce vendors are WIC VENDORS and will accept WIC and SENIOR FARMERS MARKET NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM vouchers. Visit the LOST RIVER MARKET & DELI INFORMATION BOOTH and learn more about our local community grocery store in Paoli, located at 26 Library Street behind the Paoli Public Library. This full service member-owned food co-op market not only has a deli, but also bulk items, local and organic produce, local meats, cheeses, natural foods, wine and beer. Be sure to stop by to take a look. Everyone is welcome.
