REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: It was a cloudy, muggy day at the market, promising much needed rain. We had 40 vendors, down quite a bit because of drought conditions. Our visitor count, however, is still very good. We had visitors from Los Angeles, Tennessee, Ecuador, and all parts of Indiana. Our Farmers Market Jammers showed up in full force with 21 musicians playing away all morning.
Chef Michael Jackson of Sinclair’s Restaurant at the West Baden Dome, who also happens to be one of our vendors, did a fabulous Farm to Fork Chef Demo. He used fresh produce and homemade bread purchased at the Market that morning to make grilled vegetable and bacon sandwiches with a drizzle of sesame oil. Our visitors crowded around for a taste. Jo Ann Morgan a.k.a. Josey Flake the Clown, stopped by to give the kids a ticket for a ride at Barry’s Carnival, an annual event in Orleans to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.

OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET: Be sure to stop by and see our new BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILOR where you can browse a great selection of books. We welcome the donations of books for the book trailer. All of the money from book sales goes to support Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market (Orleans). Just bring the books to the BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILOR and choose a book for free. Visit us at the Host Tent and have a free cup of coffee courtesy of our neighbor, Maple Street Restaurant. We are fortunate to have friendly, helpful MASTER GARDENERS at every market. Bring your gardening questions to the MASTER GARDENER TABLE and they will be very happy to help you! REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: Sunny and hot weather marked the start of our high season at the Market. The tomatoes, green beans, sweet corn, blackberries and other summery produce sold quickly! We had 61 vendors and a crowded sidewalk all morning. Our customer counts were even higher than last week’s. We registered 8 new vendors. We had visitors all the way up from Texas and all parts of Indiana. Chef Jackie Deckard of R Street Bistro, Bedford, IN and her two sous chefs whipped up scrumptious recipes including pork medallions with barbecue sauce made with Vance’s maple syrup, a spicy corn relish made with sweet corn, peppers, onions and zucchini and then, to top it all off, she made a lovely salad of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil drizzled with a balsamic vinegar reduction. The best part is that we got to taste! M-m good! While serving our customers her tasty dishes, she added 8 reservations for her restaurant that night. But what made us especially happy was her purchasing produce from our own market vendors to use at the R Street Bistro that very night! Chef Jackie had such a grand time that she plans to return for another Farm to Fork chef demo later in the season. Our jammers took up two 10’ X 10’ tents and included Bob Gibson and Friends who came all the way from Perry County to make music for our visitors.

We are fortunate to have friendly, helpful MASTER GARDENERS at every market. Bring your gardening questions to the MASTER GARDENER TABLE and they will be very happy to help you!
