The Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market is located on the west side of the beautiful historic Congress Square Park in Orleans, Indiana, and takes place each Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Please support your local growers, bakers, artists and handcrafters by shopping at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market. Bring your friends and family!
Last week, we surveyed our wonderful vendors. Here’s what they expect to have at the Orange County HomeGrown on Saturday, June 13th, 2009:
From the Farm: beets, black raspberries, bok choy, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cucumbers, eggs, endive, garlic scapes and garlic scallions, gooseberries, greens, fresh herbs, lettuces, maple syrup, meat (beef and pork), mint, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, scallions, local greenhouse tomatoes, hydroponic tomatoes, fresh flowers, plants, water plants
From the Kitchen: brownies, cake, cookies, doggie treats, fudge, granola, lemonade, muffins, noodles, peanut brittle, persimmon pulp, pies, popcorn treats, quick breads, salt rising bread, yeast bread
Art and Crafts: aprons, baby bibs, bags, baskets, bean bag toys, bird houses, candles, cloth books, clothespin bags, crochet, horseshoe crafts, hypertufa, jewelry, leather goods, painted gourds, painted tools, planters, photographs, purses, quilts, rugs, rustic furniture, signs, soft goods, soaps, stationary, wooden bowls, wooden toys, wreaths, wool yarns
THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:
It’s time to roll up your sleeves to give the gift of life. The American Red Cross bus will be at the farmers market to take blood donations beginning at 8:00 a.m. If you are a presenting donor, you’ll get a $2.00 coupon to spend at the farmers market. It’s not too late to sign up for the Farmers Market Walking Club sponsored by Bloomington Hospital of Orange County Community Outreach, Dunn Memorial Hospital, Williams Bros. Pharmacy and Orange County HomeGrown. For signing up, you will receive a free water bottle, walking trail maps, a step counter, a free health screening which includes Total Cholesterol/Glucose/Blood Pressure, Walking Club instructions plus a coupon to spend at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Markets. (Sign-ups will also take place on June 20th) Dunn Memorial will also be on hand to do lipid panel tests for $10 each. It’s the summer festival you’ve all been waiting for! The fabulous Lotus Dickey Hometown Music & Arts Festival will take place this weekend in conjunction with the farmers market. Music will begin Friday night and continue through Sunday evening. Not only will our Jammer Tent be filled with music, you’ll also be able to hear some great music from two stages in the park. Brack and Linda plan to take more visitors on horse and buggy rides around the quaint historic Town of Orleans. Buggy ride donations are given to the farmers market.
OUR VENDOR OF THE WEEK: Briscoe Beef of Mitchell, Indiana is this week’s featured vendor. The Briscoe family sells state-inspected, all natural, farm fresh freezer beef. We are delighted to have them selling local beef at our farmers market. Plan your next big family grill out and head over to their booth to buy those steaks and burgers! If you are visiting Briscoe Beef’s booth (look for the red Indiana Hoosiers tent when the timer rings, you’ll get coupon!
REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: What a beautiful sunny day we had today as we all headed for the farmers market. Again we had record numbers of vendors and customers. At 9 a.m., there were 124 visitors, at 10 a.m., 216 visitors and at 11 a.m. there were 163 visitors taking advantage of the lovely morning. We counted 68 vendors and many had lovely spring produce. Several people enjoyed the free yoga class offered. Twenty-three people (18 women and 5 men) signed up our new Farmers Market Walking Club sponsored by Bloomington Hospital of Orange County Community Outreach, Dunn Memorial Hospital, Williams Bros. Pharmacy and Orange County HomeGrown. Don’t worry; sign-ups will also take place on June 13th and 20th. We had another delicious Farm to Fork Chef Demo with French Lick Springs Resort Chefs. They were busy with the long line of hungry people who enjoyed sampling their yummy dishes. Our Farmers Market Jammers played music all morning while Brack and Linda took market visitors on horse and buggy rides around town.
OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET: Be sure to stop by and see our BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER where you can browse a great selection of books. (We have thousands!) We welcome the donations of books for the book trailer. All of the money from book sales goes to support Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market (Orleans). Just bring the books to the BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER and choose a book for free. Visit us at the Host Tent and have a free cup of coffee courtesy of our neighbor, Maple Street Restaurant. We are fortunate to have friendly, helpful MASTER GARDENERS at every market. Bring your gardening questions to the MASTER GARDENER TABLE and they will be very happy to help you! Another great feature of the Market is the addition of the Orange County Recycling Co-op truck. They will take household items for recycling, such as cardboard, newspapers, junk mail, paper, magazines, catalogues, plastic bottles #1 and #2, aluminum cans, scrap metal, metal cans, plastic grocery bags. Please rinse out plastic bottles and remove lids. Also, rinse out cans. Please break down cardboard boxes. Many of our produce vendors are WIC VENDORS and will accept WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutritional Program vouchers. Visit the LOST RIVER MARKET & DELI INFORMATION BOOTH and learn more about our local community grocery store in Paoli, located at 26 Library Street behind the Paoli Public Library. This full service member-owned food co-op market not only has a deli, but also bulk items, local and organic produce, local meats, cheeses, natural foods, wine and beer. Be sure to stop by to take a look. Everyone is welcome.
VALLEY FARMERS MARKET ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Orange County HomeGrown Valley Market is open on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. now located between the Indiana Railway Museum and the French Lick Springs over-flow parking lot just off of Highway 56. This week they are having their official Grand Opening/Blessing of the Market Ceremony and will offer free tea, lemonade & cookies. You’ll also find Valley Farmers Market vendors on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the French Lick Market on W. College Street next to French Lick Post Office with the French Lick Market.
