We are excited to announce that Throop Elementary School Cheerleaders will hold a Farmers Market Pep Rally &amp;amp; Cheerleading Clinic for School Age Children (up to 6th grade.)  Be sure to dust off your pom poms, bring the kids and join in the fun!!!  Start your Saturday morning doing your body and soul some good by joining our popular weekly free yoga class for men and women at 8:30 with instructor, Janet Kennedy.  No experience necessary.  All ability levels are welcome!  If you don’t have a yoga mat, one will be provided for you.  Other items to bring, if you wish:  an old blanket, an old necktie or belt and an old sheet.  The Orange County Recycling Co-op truck will be on hand to collect your household recyclables.  Mary Lou Beckett, our favorite Master Gardener will be on hand to answer your gardening questions.  And, as always, our Farmers Market Jammers will lift your spirits with their fun music.  Bring your instrument and/or your singin’ voice and join in!  Our good neighbor, Orleans Methodist Church, is holding a Camp Rivervale Youth Group Breakfast from 7-10 am just across the street from the market.  Stop in before the market opens and have a good breakfast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;OUR VENDOR OF THE WEEK:&lt;/strong&gt; Our featured vendor this week is Catherine Ernst.  She sells perfectly lovely organic produce from her garden.  If you are visiting his booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;It was a hot one at the market this week with a brief cooling shower; however, we had 59 vendors.  The Host Tent was busy registering 7 vendors, including returning vendors of Gerkin Farms who will be bringing sweet corn next week!  The tomatoes and green beans are in now, so we can happily say that we’re in high season.  Our customer count reached 164 at 10 a.m. and the count hovered around 120 at our 9 and 11 o’clock counts.  French Lick Springs Resort Executive Chef Brian Schack showed visitors how to make a pesto sauce using farmers market basil to go over orzo pasta purchased at Lost River Market &amp;amp; Deli.  He also made a delicious sabayon sauce that goes nicely with fresh fruit and vendor Betty Allen’s sweet quick breads!  Visitors got free samples and recipes.  Chef Brian will be sending other chefs from the resort during the market season for more chef demonstrations. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET:&lt;/strong&gt; Be sure to stop by and see our new BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER where you can browse a great selection of books. They will take household items for recycling, such as cardboard, newspapers, junk mail, paper, magazines, catalogues, plastic bottles #1 and #2, aluminum cans, scrap metal, metal cans, plastic grocery bags.  Please rinse out plastic bottles and remove lids.  Also, rinse out cans.  Please break down cardboard boxes.  Many of our produce vendors are WIC VENDORS and will accept WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutritional Program vouchers. This week, the book sale proceeds will go to the three public libraries in Orange County so that they can replenish their book shelves. Next time you clean off your book shelves, please consider donating your books to our Buck-a-Book trailer. The books you donate help with supporting our farmers market. Our other featured vendor is new to our market this season. The Hoover family (Dave, Pam, Jarrod and Emily) also known as Rooster’s Run Farm of Salem, sells wonderfully touchable wool yarn, weaving kits, pin cushions plus produce. They will be carding and spinning wool right in their booth. Stop by and see their antique sock knitter in action! If you are visiting either the Buck-a-Book trailer or Rooster’s Run Farm booth and the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET:&lt;br /&gt;Despite the threats of thunderstorms, we had a great market! We had 37 vendors brave the cloudy skies. Visitors from Louisiana and Tennessee signed our guest book. The Award Winning FCCLA Team (Family Career &amp;amp; Community Leaders of America Culinary Arts) under the direction of Angie Timan cooked up tremendous fare (salad, slaw, zucchini fritters and kabobs) for our shoppers using produce purchased at the farmers market and meat and cheese purchased from Lost River Market &amp;amp; Deli. (They even did the dishes!!) They will be heading to Florida to compete for the national title on July 15th, so on that day, let’s send these young chefs our good thoughts! Our farmers market gave them $75 for them to use toward their trip. Sixteen musicians showed up to jam this week. Last week, we promised to give you a report on the Red Cross Blood Drive. There were 29 presenting donors with 24 successful donations. If you are visiting her booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET:&lt;br /&gt;The Market was bustling this week with 53 vendors and hundreds of visitors.  We had visitors from Virginia, Missouri, Washington, Maine, Chicago, Wisconsin, Ohio and all parts of Indiana.  The Hoosier Fly Fishers showed up to demonstrate fly casting and fly tying.  They were a huge hit!  We are hopeful that they will return later this season.  The Red Cross bus was full of blood donors.  (We’ll give a final report a bit later regarding the number of pints they were able to get.)  People are catching on quickly about the Orange County Recycling Co-op truck being at the Market each Saturday to collect household recyclables.  Their volunteers were quite busy filling the truck’s bins with items that will be recycled and will not end up in a landfill.  We are in need of more volunteers at the farmers market. We had visitors from Idaho, Arizona, California, Ohio, and all parts of Indiana.  We know because they sign our guest book!   The Lawrence County Rock Club set up a fabulous display of rocks and minerals and spoke with many people.  We loved having the Tri County Antique Machinery Farm Association bring their tractors to the market. Katie and Seth are new to our market this year.  Katie is a rookie vendor selling soaps she makes and sparkly jewelry perfect for the hip crowd.  Seth may be our youngest vendor this season, but he’s not hard to miss.  You’ll find him either at his booth or walking on the stilts he makes to sell!  His stilts will keep your kids or grandkids busy. Their parents, David and Ellen, are not far because they’re singin’ and playin’ away in the Jammer Tent.  If you are visiting Katie and Seth’s booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET:&lt;br /&gt;When yours truly woke up before the crack of dawn to get ready to head to Orleans, it was pouring rain.  We checked the radar and saw that most of the rain was south of hwy. 64, so off we went to Orleans thinking the market would be somewhat of a bust.  Boy, were we pleasantly surprised!  We ended up with 42 vendors (We registered 7 vendors.)  Our customer counts were higher than the previous two weeks and our vendors were selling out!  We were delighted to see 10 people take advantage of our weekly free yoga class!  The Jammer Tent was filled with musicians and the music was uplifting. If you are visiting her booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: It seemed as if everyone came to the market this week to share the joy at having such a beauteous day.  Forty-seven vendors and hundreds of visitors spent their Saturday morning at the park.  Many of our regulars brought out of town family and friends to the market for something fun to do and to buy the lovely produce.  The strawberries and baked goods went especially fast.  We were pleased to see 2 men and 4 women take advantage of the free yoga class at the market.  Several people brought their household recyclables to the Orange County Recycling Co-op truck which will be at the market every Saturday.  Our jammer tent was filled to capacity with local musicians.  Their music sure adds flavor to the atmosphere!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OTHER GREAT FEATURES AT THE MARKET: Be sure to stop by and see our new BUCK A BOOK/BOOK A BOOK TRAILER where you can browse a great selection of books. The weather was perfection and we had a great turnout of vendors, visitors and volunteers! We had 47 vendors, including several new to our market, begin our season, a record for Opening Day. At 10:00, we had over 100 visitors at the park. HomeGrown Board President and Buck-a-Book Volunteer, Bob Turner, served as Master of Ceremonies for our season opener. Robert Henderson, Orleans Chamber of Commerce President, spoke of Congress Square Park’s history as a gathering place and how the farmers market fit right in. Mike Fields of the Orleans Town Council officially welcomed the farmers market. Phil Mininger blessed the market and spoke of hope of bounty for all. Pete Webb and Jesse Smith performed a song about our market Pete wrote to the tune of “House of the Rising Sun” to the delight of the crowd. Here’s a portion: “There is a place in good old Orleans they call the Farmers Market. Take your vehicle to the Square and find a place to park it! Fruits, greens and veggies will be a great delight. It will be located on the west side of the beautiful historic Congress Square Park in Orleans, Indiana.  We will be open each Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon through September and then from 9:00 a.m. to noon during the month of October.  Please support your local growers, bakers, artists and handcrafters by shopping at the Orange County HomeGrown Farmers Market. &lt;br /&gt;                We anticipate lots of lovely spring produce, plant starts, delicious baked goods, and locally made unique crafts on opening day.  Our Opening Day Ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will include remarks by special guest, Robert Henderson, the Blessing of the Market by Mary Minninger and music by Pete Webb &amp;amp; Late for Supper.&lt;br /&gt;                We’ll have free coffee, courtesy of our neighbor Maple Street Restaurant, each Saturday. We wish to send you a big thank you for all of your support this past year.  Thank you, thank you!&lt;br /&gt;We'll rest up this winter and make plans for next season.  &lt;br /&gt;    We also want to tell you about some great things happening in Orange County.  They are listed below.&lt;br /&gt;The third annual Orange County HomeGrown Holiday Market is Saturday, November 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Paoli High School.  There will be about 50 of our vendors there selling locally made baked goods, gifts and crafts for your holiday needs.  There will be live entertainment by local musicians.  Lunch will be available too!   Be sure to make plans to begin your holiday shopping and spend your dollars locally.&lt;br /&gt;Be sure to stop by the new member-owned food co-op, Lost River Market &amp;amp; Deli.  They sell natural foods, bulk foods, local and organic produce, local meats, local cheeses, conventional items and much more.  There is seating available if you wish to eat a delicious soup, sandwich or salad prepared by the deli.  The store is located on 26 Library Street right off the Paoli Square behind the library.  The store is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Check out their website for more information &lt;a href="http://www.lostrivercoop.com/index.html"&gt;http://www.lostrivercoop.com/index.html&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you know that Orange County now has a Recycling Co-op and Resale Store?  It's located on Water Street in Paoli.  You can recycle day or night.  They will take the following items:  cardboard, newspapers, junk mail, paper, magazines, catalogues, plastic bottles #1 and #2, aluminum cans, scrap metal, metal cans, plastic grocery bags, bubble wrap, shrink wrap, appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and microwaves, computer equipment, cell phones, car batteries and bagged packing peanuts.  Please rinse out plastic bottles and remove lids.  Also, rinse out cans.  Please break down cardboard boxes.  The resale store is open rain or shine Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon and Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon.  They sell household goods, books, home decor, furniture, appliances, and building materials.  Keep good clean used items out of the landfill by donating to the resale store.  Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle. The Town of Orleans is sponsoring a Fall Fun Fest in conjunction with our Farmers Market so there will be many things to do.  The Farmers Market will have a Scarecrow Contest.  Read below for the details.  The Orange County Amateur Radio Club ARES will be at the Market as well.  And, as always, our Farmers Market Jammers all decked out in their new t-shirts and hats will lift your spirits with their fun music.  Bring your instrument and/or your singin’ voice and join in!  The Orleans Town Chamber will host a variety of fun family activities all day in the park including an antique tractor display, an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, a 5 K health walk, a 3 on 3 basketball tourney, a pumpkin decorating contest, an historic walking tour, a corn hole tourney, an apple pie baking contest, an ugly cart parade, kids’ activities, and more. Dunn Memorial Hospital will sponsor a one-mile walk with tee-shirts to be handed out to the first twenty participants. Dunn’s Health Express will be present for Total Cholesterol Glucose screenings as well as Blood Pressures, all free of charge.  We encourage everyone to take advantage of the free screenings and walk a mile for your health. The Health Express will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at noon, with the walk starting around 10:30 a.m. Water and fruit will also be handed out to walkers.  There will even be a pet costume contest!  The contest will include five categories:  most original, prettiest, ugliest, funniest and most colorful.  Registration begins at 10:30 in front of Kirk Veterinary Service, located on the south side of the park.  The entry fee is $5.00 with all of the proceeds to benefit the Chamber’s Community Improvement Fund.  The parade will get underway at 11:00 a.m.  A professional photographer will be available to take pictures of your pet for a small fee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SCARECROW CONTEST ON OCTOBER 20th!  Each Saturday through October 20th, we’ll have our free Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area set up with straw, twine and scissors.  All you need to do is bring some old clothes to stuff your scarecrow with.  We’ll have local pumpkins available to buy too if you wish to have a head for your scarecrow.  On the day of the contest, October 20th, make a scarecrow at the Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area or bring the scarecrow that you made earlier back to the Market.  We’ll have a place set up to display all the scarecrows.  Next to each scarecrow, we’ll place an empty mason jar.  That morning we’ll give all of the vendors, volunteers, jammers and visitors one ticket each to use for voting.  We’ll all get to look over the scarecrows and drop in our ticket to cast our vote for our favorite.  Voting will begin at 10:00 and end at 11:00.  There will be prizes for the winners. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OUR VENDOR OF THE WEEK: The Lost River Market and Deli, a project initiated by Orange County HomeGrown, will be our featured vendor.  The exciting opening of the natural food, full service grocery will happen on October 23!  For the first couple of weeks while the staff is in training, the store will have reduced hours, 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Regular hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays.  The Lost River Market and Deli, a cooperative, will feature healthful foods, bulk foods, local foods, a healthful salad bar and a grab &amp;amp; go deli. We could even see our breath while setting up our booths.  We had 44 vendors and registered one new vendor.  The Market was bustling with visitors all morning, visitors from Idaho, Massachusetts, and all parts of Indiana.   While the Jammers entertained, there were little ones making scarecrows with their mothers at our free Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area.  They are getting ready for our Scarecrow Contest which takes place on the 20th. This time of the season, we’re usually bundled up in our sweaters while preparing our Market for opening, but this past Saturday we were wearing shorts and t-shirts!  We had 37 vendors set up.  We registered one new vendor.  We are very happy to welcome another new volunteer, Sashia.  We had visitors from Texas and all parts of Indiana.  Phil Mininger brought his antique cider press and lots of apples.  He made many gallons of apple cider for us to drink.  It was refreshing and sweet on this hot day.  Heavenbound Bluegrass joined our Farmers Market Jammers under the Jam Tent for some great music. We had several people take advantage of our free Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area. If you are visiting his booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: It was a lovely fall day at the Market again this week.  We’re still going strong with 45 vendors and a boatload of visitors.  We had visitors from Mexico, Rhode Island, Missouri, Wisconsin, Canada and all over Indiana.  We registered 2 new vendors.  Greenpeace and First Chance Center were set up to educate us about their non profit organizations.  We had loads of kids and adults show up to make scarecrows at our Make-Your-Own Scarecrow area!  Watercolor artist, Anna Marie Mahler returned to paint her rural scenes.  We had many gardeners who brought soil samples for our Master Gardeners to test.  As our Farmers Market Jammers showed up at the jam tent to play music, we handed out their brand new Farmers Market Jammer t-shirts and hats which were provided by Hoosier Hills Credit Union. Forty-five vendors set up their tents and tables with a stunning sunrise as their backdrop.  We registered 2 vendors.  At 10:00, we had over 100 visitors at the park, including someone from Las Vegas visiting family here and a couple from Australia who stopped by on their way to Tennessee when they noticed the Square Dancers dancing away by the park fountain.   Watercolor artist, Anna Marie Mahler sat in the shade of the sycamore tree and painted a lovely picture while chatting with shoppers.  Our Master Gardener, Mary Lou Beckett informed gardeners how to take a soil sample for testing. It turned out to be a lovely morning.  We had 50 vendors brave the chilly weather.  We registered 3 vendors from Huron, St. Anthony and West Baden. We had a whopping 14 volunteers who showed up to help us with our tasks.  (By the way, if you are interested in spending time with friendly folks while volunteering to do simple tasks, we’d love to have you.  Just give us a call at 723-5877 and ask for Alice.)  Many folks are still taking advantage of the autumn produce still available at the Market.  We even had visitors from Florida and Virginia.  The talented musicians of Box of Chocolates made great music at the south end of the market while our Farmers Market Jammers played away all morning at the north end.  It was Park Appreciation Day at the Market.  All of the donations we collected from our Buck-a-Book sales and at the Host Tent totaling $181.81 will be given to the Town of Orleans in appreciation for allowing us use of the beautiful park.  We’ll ask the Town to use the money for park upkeep. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FABULOUS NEWS!&lt;br /&gt;Hoosier Hills Credit Union has once again shown their support for our farmers market and our beloved Farmers Market Jammers. If you are visiting their booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: It was a cloudy, muggy day at the market, promising much needed rain. We had 40 vendors, down quite a bit because of drought conditions. Our visitor count, however, is still very good. We had visitors from Los Angeles, Tennessee, Ecuador, and all parts of Indiana. Our Farmers Market Jammers showed up in full force with 21 musicians playing away all morning.&lt;br /&gt;Chef Michael Jackson of Sinclair’s Restaurant at the West Baden Dome, who also happens to be one of our vendors, did a fabulous Farm to Fork Chef Demo. He used fresh produce and homemade bread purchased at the Market that morning to make grilled vegetable and bacon sandwiches with a drizzle of sesame oil. Our visitors crowded around for a taste. Jo Ann Morgan a.k.a. If you are visiting their booth when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood on market day. We had 59 vendors. We registered 3 new vendors including a child vendor selling his homemade lemonade. We had 9 volunteers helping out with our market chores. The Red Cross Blood Drive collected 17 pints of blood, more than their expected goal for the morning. Donors received coupons for the Market and for the Blue Spot Coffee Shop, our newest neighbors who also gave out samples of their specialty coffees during our cooking demonstration. Alice whipped up some sweet French toast using her grandmother’s recipe, Cathy Davison’s egg bread, farm fresh eggs from the Zehnders and the Bender-Beauregards and then she topped it all off using Vance Elliott’s maple syrup. The Earth Mamas Dance Troupe kept visitors entertained with their graceful moves. Our Farmers Market Jammer Tents (We now have two!) were filled with a record 20 musicians throughout the morning. One gentleman heard about the Jammers at last week’s HomeGrown Arts Lawn Chair Concert at the French Lick Springs Hotel. He and his wife were visiting the hotel from Dayton, Ohio. Here’s what they expect to have at the Orange County HomeGrown on Saturday, September 1st, 2007:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the Farm:  cantaloupe, chili peppers, corn, cucumbers, eggs, eggplant, green beans, herbs, honey, okra, sweet peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon, plants, flowers, maple syrup, gourds, field corn, squirrel corn&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the Kitchen:  bagels, biscotti , brownies, cake, cookies, fudge, granola,  pies, quick breads, scones, salt rising bread, yeast bread, yeast rolls, jams, jellies, doggie treats, barbecue sauce, fried pies&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Art and Crafts:  baskets, bird houses, crochet, fresh flower arrangements, jewelry, leather goods, photographs, purses, rustic furniture, rugs, soaps, stationary, soft goods, hand sewn items, quilts, baskets, dolls, cutting boards, painted glass containers, aprons&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Services &amp; Other Goods:  foot massage&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:&lt;br /&gt;There will be plenty of events this week to keep you pleasantly busy at the Market.  The Red Cross Blood Drive will take place from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Presenting donors will receive a gift from the Red Cross, a $2.00 coupon to spend at the Market and a coupon to spend at the newly opened Blue Spot Coffee Shop, another of our friendly neighbors in Orleans.  The Earth Mamas Dance Troupe will once again entertain.  Around 10:00 a.m., Alice will cook up some decadent French toast using Cathy Davison’s bread, Farmers Market eggs and Vance Elliott’s maple syrup.  To wash the sampling of French toast down, The Blue Spot Coffee Shop will provide a tasting of their lattes.  And, as always, we’ll have fun music provided by our own Farmers Market Jammers!  Bring your instrument and/or your singing voice and join in.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SPECIAL REQUEST: &lt;br /&gt;The Buck-a-Book Trailer is in need of some used classics for the adults.  Please consider clearing off your bookshelves and donating books. Thanks a heap!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OUR VENDOR OF THE WEEK: Vance Elliott, Pam Mundy and Shelley Jackson will be our vendors of the week.  Vance sells produce and also maple syrup made from the trees on his Orleans farm.  He’ll provide the maple syrup for the French toast Alice is making this week at the Market.  Pam, along with her buddy Shelley, make unique hypertufa pots, miniature herb gardens, bird houses and signs.  If you are visiting our Vendor of the Week booths when the timer rings, you’ll get a coupon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;REPORT FROM LAST WEEK’S MARKET: We were all expecting (and hoping for) at least a little rain for our farmers/gardeners that afternoon, but it never came to pass.  We had cloudy skies and a nice breeze instead.  We had 51 vendors.  We registered 3 new vendors.  We even welcomed another new volunteer.  Our visitor count each hour hovered around 100.  Bonnie Burton-Taylor showed visitors how to salsa dance while Alice grilled pizza using produce, pizza dough and pesto bought at the Market that very morning.
